AIM

The aim of the ITI Conference is to promote the communication and interaction among researchers involved in the development and application of methods and techniques within the broad framework of information and communication technology. ITI seeks papers that will advance the state of the art in the field and help foster increased interaction among academic, engineering and business communities. This year's special "memorial" session and panel discussion topic COMPUTER AT THE UNIVERSITY (which was the title of all our conferences from 1974, until the 1990) is intended to focus on the role of information technology in the academic community.

        Information and communication technology is changing our way of life, as well as ways of conducting business and commerce. We are in a midst of a revolution from industrial society of the 20th century towards an information society of the 21st century. Opening of new markets and attracting of international investment provides commercial, social and professional opportunities, but also creates new barriers between those who do and those who don't have access. The World Summit on Information Society (WSIS), organized by ITU, to be held under the auspices of Kofi Annan, secretary general of the UN will bring together representatives of governments, international and regional institutions, private sector and civil society to address the issues and challenges brought upon us by the high-speed pace of technology. As a part of the national preparatory process for the WSIS this panel will bring together representatives of the government and the academic community to assess the implementation of the Croatian national Strategy for the development of information and communication technology, within the framework of Declaration of Principles and Action Plan of the WSIS and regional initiatives (eSEE, eEuropePlus, eEurope 2005). Panelist will introduce some of the issues raised in the process of implementation of the national strategy, e-Government projects, deregulation of the telecommunication market, regional cooperation and benchmarking and provide a background for an open discussion.

    • INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN HIGHER EDUCATION
      Date and time: June 17, 12:00 - 13:30

      Moderator: Prof. Leo Budin, Ph.D.
      University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing
      Panelists: Prof. Blaženka Divjak, Ph.D;
      Prof. Robert Manger, Ph.D.;
      Prof. Božidar Lišcic, Ph.D., Member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU);
      Prof. Pero Lučin, Ph.D

        Education and research are foundations of the forthcoming information society, that is, the society of knowledge. The teaching function of the university will be reshaped by new expectations from students concerned about the return of investments made in their education, on the part of business leaders seeking graduates with practical competence, and of politicians who want more efficient and effective education. Furthermore, universities must face the fact that students have to be prepared for lifelong learning, the phenomenon that is becoming a necessary prerequisite for successful functioning in the future dynamic knowledge workplace. The research function of the university should be reshaped in order to place more emphasis on research leading to innovations. Besides the basic role in generating new ideas, university will play a major role in selecting, clarifying, and integrating the principles relevant to practice. Information and communication technology may in many ways influence the teaching and research processes in the university of the future. Panelists will stress the main implementation issues regarding the transformation of Croatian higher education, with special emphasis to the possibilities of international co-operation at European and regional levels, that may improve the quality and rate of progress of the reshaping process.
